DOCTORS AND MEDICAL STAFF IN HO CHI MINH CITY NEED IMMEDIATE HELP

August 08, 2021 -

An initiative to raise funds to support the medical doctors and broader medical community in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC, also known as 'SaiGon') began as an idea born in the heart of Sister Duyet Nghiem, a nun at Blue Cliff Monastery in upstate NY. Sister is a former medical doctor from HCMC which is now being ravaged by the Covid-19 virus and the Delta Variant. Her idea was quickly supported by lay practitioners, Anne Woods and Judith Myerson, who know this dear monastic sister well and are intimately acquainted with her big heart.

HCMC medical donation

HCMC is experiencing a severe outbreak of the virus, with thousands of new cases every day - 117,906 in this recent wave that began in April. The medical community has been completely overwhelmed. There is an immediate need for support in purchasing the N95 masks and other PPE.

The nation is responding, but the need is so great. Individuals and social groups are also raising funds for their sisters and brothers in the south. Doctors and medical support staff have left their cities and towns to support their colleagues in the south, leaving their own communities in a more vulnerable position. All eyes are on the unfolding drama of sickness and death.

The city has been in a strict 'lockdown' since early July. Businesses have had to close, people are fined, if they leave their homes without a valid reason, large factories have shut down, leaving their thousands of migrant employees without any recourse, other than to leave in an epic exodus for their home villages in the north. The food distribution system has been interrupted, and food is scarce in the city.

We, at the Loving Work Foundation, were contacted by the three compassionate samaritans mentioned above requesting our support. Trish, founder and managing director of the foundation, lives in Viet Nam, and has years of experience of facilitating projects such as this one, projects that improve the lives of those in need in Viet Nam. (Our most recent humanitarian effort raised more than USD 30,000 to relieve the suffering caused by the typhoons and floods of late 2020/early 2021 that wreaked havoc in the central region of the country.)

All donations will be transferred to the foundation's Viet Nam bank account and then forwarded to Ms. Ngan in HCMC, the friend and former colleague of Sister Duyet Nghiem. Ms. Ngan will promptly distribute funds through the proper channels.

This is a time-sensitive project.
